Pastel Colors

Pastel is not simply light color. It is softened color with enough white to make aqua, pink, yellow, green, and blue feel airy, common in nurseries, baths, bedrooms, ceilings, and cottage kitchens.

Using pastel in your home

Pastels work best when the undertone has a reason to be there. Use them in bedrooms, baths, breakfast rooms, laundry rooms, or ceilings with warm white trim, pale oak, cane, soft gray, or brushed nickel. North light can make pastel blue and green feel cooler. South light can make pastel peach or yellow sweeter. Avoid choosing from a tiny chip. On large walls, a quiet Pastel Aqua can become brighter than expected.

Frequently asked questions

Are Pastel colors warm or cool?

They can be either. Pastel Aqua and pale blue read cool, and cream, blush, or peach pastels read warm.

Best Pastel paint colors?

Try Glidden Abbey White (LRV 89.7), Farrow & Ball Archive (LRV 78.1), or Benjamin Moore Aberdeen Green (LRV 63.92).

Do Pastels need low sheen?

Usually yes on walls. Matte or eggshell keeps pastel color soft, since higher sheen can make pale color look slick.
