Color Chart

If you need paint color charts or brand fan decks, the paint database covers 12,500+ colors across 6 brands. This page is for web and digital color references.

Blue

Full Spectrum

The full spectrum chart displays colors across the entire hue range with controlled saturation and lightness. It is useful for visually scanning relationships between hues and selecting approximate color values.

Using this color chart

Web-safe colors mostly matter as history: the original set had 216 colors that early browsers could display consistently. Named CSS colors are still handy for readable stylesheets and quick prototypes, especially values like white, black, transparent, and rebeccapurple. Grayscale values help set borders, dividers, disabled states, and text hierarchy without guessing at near-black or near-white.

How the Color Chart Works

  1. Pick the chart tab that matches your reference need.
  2. Click a swatch to select the color.
  3. Copy the HEX, RGB, or HSL value from the sticky bar, or export the color.

Color Chart FAQ

How many named colors does CSS have?

CSS has 148 named colors in the current named color set. A few are duplicate spellings, like gray and grey, that point to the same value.

Are web-safe colors still necessary?

No, web-safe colors are no longer necessary for normal web design. Modern browsers support millions of colors. The old 216-color set only matters when someone studies early web standards.

Can I use these colors for print or paint?

These values are screen color references, so they will not predict print ink or paint color exactly. For paint, try the HEX to paint color converter or color match from photo, then sample before buying.

Which named CSS colors are readable as text on white?

The darkest named colors pass WCAG AA (4.5:1) on white: darkslategray, midnightblue, maroon, darkgreen, indigo. Bright names like orange, gold, and lightgreen fail. When in doubt, run the exact pair through the color contrast checker on this site.

What gray should I use for borders vs text?

Use #ccc to #ddd for borders and #333 to #555 for body text on white. Borders need to separate quietly. Text lighter than about #767676 fails WCAG AA at 4.5:1 on white. Check the actual contrast ratio, because screens vary.
